For some reason I couldn’t edit my older post that has the video in it, so I’m making a new post for this paragraph.

I made this video based on Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “Novel” in which he conveys the message that experience in the best teacher and I think the video portrays this message well! I really enjoyed making this Digital Essay, from formulating ideas, to taking the videos, to editing the videos. unfortunately I didn’t have access to a real camera, so I was limited to my Iphone camera the entire time. But like they say “a bad worker always blames the tools.” Or something along those lines.

Having to make this Digital Essay also inspired me to write a better paper, because I was motivated to put more effort into the thesis and the message of my essay. I wish we had to create a video for every essay assigned during the year, because it really helped me! If I could go back in time I would make a video for every essay I wrote for this class, and keep it for my own records, because it would have helped me write much better essays, and inspired me to work harder.

Overall, the experience with this assignment was great! And by far my favorite assignment of the school year.

The first video I posted messed up and some clips became muted so this is an updated version of it

http://youtu.be/MdDWENN_AUk

Making this short video was honestly the most exciting project I had to do this semester. I was able to work with a great camera thanks to the Baruch college library and I met some pretty awesome people. When I first started recording people I didn’t have a set approach to how I wanted the video to be, but it soon took a life of its own. At first I asked people what they remembered that was important to them, but that took away from the feeling of easy going-ness of their responses and I wanted that feeling to be there because that’s how Brainard’s poem was. Then I changed my statement to asking them to finish the sentence “I remember” and then the ball really started rolling. I did get some rejections which at first annoyed me and made me not want to ask people anymore. But then I got over it and just kept on going. The last filming I did was with my friends at night where we just went up to random people in the Flatiron district and asked them to finish the sentence “I remember”. It was fun and surprisingly many of them participated; I think having more than one person asking you to be in a video for a school project made it more legitimate. Then I had to edit everything and that took a pretty long time but it was overall an amazing experience and now I want to make more videos

At first glance the video essay didnt seem like it would be to much fun and very challenging. To my surprise it was the complete opposite. Working on the video and thinking about a concept actually helped me figure out what my thesis should really focus on. Unfortunately the weather wasnt as accommodating as I hoped for but I think it all worked out fine. Working with Julia made this a lot easier and I’m really happy with our result. I think our ideas were well through through and we got to accomplish our goal. We worked really hard on our project and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. I think everyones projects came out great as well. This was a really great experience and I’m glad we had to do it.

My poem was “Square Root of Three” by David Feinberg and my thesis is that poetry and mathematics do not have to be separated. When people think of poetry, they think of words, when people think of math, they think of numbers, but when they are used together, they can create something better. So for my digital essay, I created an animation using numbers based on the story of the poem.
