Program Information

Last year, we explored the common instances, causes and consequences of misunderstandings and miscommunication in instructional and business contexts. This year, our topic, audience, is equally rich and broad. Our goal for May 1st is to stimulate a productive dialogue on the role the notion of audience plays (or should play) in our efforts to nurture among our students and employees greater sensitivity to convention, genre, style and context as well as to how cultural, generational and gender differences affect communication in both education and business.

This year’s Symposium will differ in format from the last few Symposia. In the morning portion of the program, participants will take part in a round-table discussion led by co-facilitators—a business executive and an educator—in which they will together explore a number of critical questions.
In the afternoon, participants will have a choice of one of several break-out sessions on a more specific sub-topic related to the concept of audience. These small discussion groups and workshops will focus on a range of topics including differing conceptions of audience based on generational differences, conceptions of audience in electronic communication, audience awareness, and the audience as determiner of content.
