The Nature of Capitalism

nbsp;http://www.economist.com/business/displa…

This article reminds me of Marx’s question about the nature of capitalism. Is it just human nature to want to make as much profit as possible, regardless of the consequences? Or is the capitalistic nature acquired through a long and established human history? If it were not for a social history of materialism and obsession with money, then I do not think humans would naturally do whatever it takes to make the most profit. I believe that humans are generally decent and want the best for the people and the environment, if it were not for pressures from society to make the most money possible.

The Health System

For a very long time, the declining health system is finally brought to light by Obama when he proposes his idea of a “Health Overhaul” that “could save U.S. trillions.” The problem now is the private companies that are setting up prices from health insurance resulting in the millions of people that can’t afford it. So everytime they go to the hospital, they would be screwed over by the “costs that are out of control” (2nd page of article) With the government coming into play, they will be able to cut down the cost for health insurance from the private insurance companies. The Republican complains about the government health insurance as “undermining” the private companies. I see this as just them being too greedy to help the crippling economy. The people that suffers the most is the ones that are barely surviving U.S. right now with their minimum wage jobs. They could barely afford rent as they are, and in a conversation during Sociology about Nickel and Dimed, these people are resorting to stealing ketchup packets and how someone experiencing the minimum wage life has to do two jobs to pay the rent. It shows in this declining state, at least our new leader is stepping in to make a change.

Below is the article that covers the story more in depth:

Jobless claims drop, but so do incomes and spending

Two economic reports delievered a mixed message Thursday.

The government said the number of newly laid-off U.S. workers siging up fo unemployment benefits posted an unexpected drop last week, but consumer spending fell in March for the first time in three months. The Labor Department says new applications for unemployment insurance fell to a seasonally adjusted 631,000 last week from the prior week’s 645,000, which was revised slightly higher from the government’s initial estimate. Economists expected a small increase in new claims but the number of people continuing to draw unemploymen benefits jumped to 6.27 million, highest on records dating back to 1967 and steeper than economists expected.

Taking advantage of the system is nothing new. There have been many companies hiring and giving opportunities for people to take them. Often times, people would rather keep unemployment benefits and live off of that. Back in March the rate was at 639,000, but with much opportunity for a fix.

We complain about the government exploiting us when in fact, we find a way to do the same back.

OBAMA x100!

So as we all know today is President Barack Obama’s 100th day in office. This event has been advertised on tv, newpapers & even in some of our classes. But what boggles my mind is that we have blown this up(as many other events) out of proportion. Yes he’s the first minority to enter office, & yes we were the generation who made a difference, but does that give us the right to treat this man with such a celebrity/royalty/ or even godly image? I’m not saying I dislike him, I am saying we are giving him the type of publicity that a president isnt normally supposed to have. In a Democracy, our leaders are supposed to represent us, rather than being a symbol of hierarchy (which Obama is incidentally gaining). In Obama’s case, we have become so obcessed with his image that an even so insignificant as getting a new dog makes the headline news. We have his face on our shirts, on our cups, I wouldnt be surprised if soon enough a Obama-edition car would come on the market(I’m sure GM would be its manufacturer. Nonetheless Obama is a great politician, but in my sole opinion we need to get our American minds off the celebrity view of the President & see him as the man to represent our needs.

PART 1: My boss came out from her room today, started yelling at everyone, complain how everyone is doing this wrong, doing that wrong. people just look away and me of course look away and pretend i am working so hard for the company. And when she turn to my working partner, i look down at my feet and I noctice my boss’s flyer is OPEN!!!!! so i look around and i noctice all my other co-workers started to wink at each other for opening!!! I really wanted to tell my boss but i didn’t!!! damn! what would u do?

PART 2 OF MY DAY:So today my friend who broke up with his girlfriend for months, told me that he wants to die, and he is going to kill himself, at first i was like mm he is just joking. Later on he describe everything in details of how he is going to kill himself, after i heard his plan, i am so freak out because studies had shown that people who actually plan to kill themself have a higher chance of dying, espeically male.

Who Are The Victims of The Swine Flu?

According to the media it is the poor/the “others.” This article talks about how the swine flu is mostly present in poor, impoverished areas and is not affecting the general population. Read this and let me know what you think. Do you think the article we read in class, about the problems only affecting the poor, was correct in its judgement?

Racism under Obama

With more support from African Americans then any other president, you would think Obama would address some of their problems, unlike previous presidents.

I really think you should read this article, but I pinpointed some points here in the event you dont want to read it.

 http://socialistworker.org/2009/04/27/ra…

“Despite the unprecedented support Obama received from the African American community–and continues to receive, with approval ratings in the 90 percent range–in his first three months as president, he has very little to say about a number of issues directly affecting Blacks.”

When a black man was killed in Oakland, California, nothing was mentioned about the subject in Washington. when 4 white cops were killed, Obama personally wrote a letter to be read at their funeral.

“It has also been especially disappointing that Obama has had next to nothing to say about the apocalyptic impact of the deteriorating economy on the African American community.”

Any thoughts on the matter? Maybe Obama has only been in office one hundred days and it is to early to be bashing him on his lack to fulfill his promises? What do YOU think?

Skinny people off the hook

In an article I read called “Fatties Cause Global Warming” the author gives an onslaught of facts about the obese.  All of which seems to be another contributer to global warming.  To me this article seems to be inappropriate and just a reason to target obesity.  Obesity is a real issue but these are real people also.  Telling a group of people that they are the cause of a huge environmental issue doesn’t seem very politically right.

Article here

So what do you think of this article?
