Group Members: George Chun, Henry Parker, Serigne Gueye

Our presentation discusses the definition of Net Neutrality as well as the Pros, Cons and regulation. Although most people might be for Net Neutrality, we didn’t take any sides. While doing the presentation we decided to use different type of tools which we then combine and made as one. The tools included PowerPoint, Camtasia Studio, and Jing. After creating the PowerPoint, we installed an Add-in button to the toolbar which allows us to record the PowerPoint. The Add-Ins button allows us to record the slides while capturing our voice and then let us transfer the recording into Camstasia for editing. After recording the second part of the video which was created by Jing, we combine both video together and made it as one using Camstasia Studio. Camsatasia allowed us to edit the video and submit it directly to YouTube. Although the process was long, we had a great experience and learn different ways to make a presentation online using different programs.

My focus of the tutorial is how to cut out an image using different tools. I also explained when is it best to use does tools. The tools include:

1) Magic Eraser Tool

While reading Chapter 2, I started to think about the “lost sidekick” situation. It’s made clear in this chapter that the digital tools and the information we retrieve and post on the net can be use not only as a communication tool but to collaborate people. It’s a perfect and easy way to make yourself herd to the public which is kind of like a weapon. Like Clay mention, “our social media tools its becoming part of our life.” I was amaze that the young Korean girls was participating in politics and even organize to protest. All this is possible because of the net and the more people gets interested in a story, the better chance that action will be taking.

The government of South Korea knows the power of a site which has more then one hundred thousand visitors a month and its potential. They probably will like to have a connection and know these users and I believe this is the reason they are trying to require citizens to use their real name. However, I wonder how they will do that? With so much users, it just seems impossible.

Privacy has always been an issue since 9/11 but watching the video just showed and proved how big of a problem it is. I understand that they want everyone to be protected, but the fact that they are “spying” on us without our consent is disturbing and uncomfortable. It’s not fair that we have to sacrifice our freedom for security. Indeed, the fact that they are watching our every move is not going to make a big different. If someone will want to do something, they will find a way to do it.

In my opinion, the fact that the government is watching us, listening to our calls and etc. can lead to a type of discrimination. They might judge you because of what you said or believe. For example, recently on the news it has been reported that “a secret New York Police Department were program to spy on Muslim businesses, infiltrate mosques and monitor Muslim students on college campuses.” So my question is, Is it right to spy on a person just because he is a Muslim?

Clay Shirky made some important and interesting points on his book Here Comes Everybody. He opened my eye to what the internet is really becoming. It’s amazing to see that most of the activities that are done on the internet have to do with people connecting with others. For example, I remember a time when almost all the games online are only played with the computer. However things have change in the past few years. Most of the new games online now allow you to play with another person from any country in the world. You are able to play chess with a real person and see how he or she thinks, you gain experiences from others, and you can even learn about the culture of others.

In addition, organizing a group has become too easy. Like it’s been pointed out in the book, People can organize without having an organization. And they don’t need your org’s permission to organize around something related to your organization. With that being said; a company, the government and ect. has to be careful of what they say or do. Whereas it was very difficult to gather a community to protest at one point, it is relatively easy to do so in our days. This makes me think about sites such as ratemyprofessor.com and how it functions. Students post comments on whether to take a certain professor based on the reviews. The bad effect of the internet is that it can easily ruins somebodies rep.

From my perspective, the internet is beneficial when connecting with people online but there are also as many downsides to it. How can we know what information is accurate or not if most people that share information on the net are not experts or certified? Indeed, controlling information that’s been share on the net is very difficult. As a result, some information that’s been shared ends up becoming a privacy issue for others.

If anyone would have told me that the Wikipedia project will be successful, I wouldn’t believe it. Wiki is a type of software that depends on the community and to get a large amount of users to contribute is difficult. In addition, there are so many people working on a single article that its hard to believe the information will be accurate. However, most information found on wiki are accurate and updated so that the information is recent. Whereas most information are done with once its already publish, Wikipedia has a different approach. For example, Shirky tolds us about the Wikipedia article on Pluto. From this story we can tell that Wikipedia is very affected because once Pluto was no longer a planet, it was updated on Wikipedia “almost immediately”. Overall Wikipedia is amazing because its free and most of the time when you Google a topic, there is a big chance that it is already been talked about in wiki.
