Privacy and Government

When listening to these videos especially the second it is strange to think how we have almost  come full circle in regards to American society.  As the British used to search an entire village with a single warrant how we now not only search but store data most likely infinitely about our neighbors our brothers our fellow countrymen sometimes without warrants or a justifiable reason.  I also thought it was interesting, as one man said, the balance between security and privacy sways as one increases.  I never had thought about the way that our security is also intertwined with our privacy.  We love our privacy here in America but also love our freedom.  As not many wars have taken place on our home soil I believe we have a false sense of our own security.  This data-mining phenomenon as a marketing major is seen as the next big tool decreasing the amount of waste sent to consumers.  However, it also is the governments next way of monitoring, trending and categorizing us essentially discriminating their own people.

I think security and privacy is important but sometimes they need to be sacrificed because we are in danger even though there are not many wars on the land but there have been terror threats which involve people trying to be average people which mean there needs to be even a little bit of spying to catch them.

Its true that our privacy has been invaded by the government and it is by no means fair as invasion of privacy is always wrong. But we have to because of the threat of terror allow this wrong. The average man is no knowledgeable enough to gather information as well as the government and as such we have to trust that they will not abuse the powers they have. They have to categorize and classify individuals before they can truly begin to find suspects.

  3. I liked your statement about how one increases the other sways. I never thought of it like that either but it is def. true. The government needs to learn how to level it out.
