Join acclaimed writing Danny Senna on December 1 at 5:45 PM in the Newman Conference Center, Room 750 (Library building). Senza’s most recent book is Where Did You Sleep Last Night? — a compelling memoir that traces her mixed roots: her blue-blood, white mother’s family (the Howes of Boston) and her black activist father’s family, the Sennas. In the book, she reconstructs a long-buried family mystery that illuminates her own childhood, her enigmatic father, the power and failure of her parents’ union and, finally, the forces of history. See you there!

Dear Students,

The Starr Career Development Center seeks to provide the highest quality service for Baruch College students. We are continually reviewing our workshop offerings and trying to assess their effectiveness. In an effort to evaluate the seminars, we will be conducting a series of focus groups with our students. We would love your feedback about how to improve our workshops!

Would you be willing to meet for approximately 60-90 minutes with 10-12 of your classmates and a representative from the Starr Career Development Center to discuss your experience in our workshops? We are interested in your honest impression of the workshops – what works and what does not work. Please be assured that nothing you say will be revealed. Even your participation in the focus group will remain confidential. If you have never attended a workshop, we would still value your opinion on how best to market them to the Baruch student population and what topics we should consider adding to our existing schedule.

As a token of our gratitude, your participation will make you eligible for a raffle drawing to win one of several $25 gift cards to be used at the bookstore. Please reply to Lisa.OConnor at baruch.cuny.edu and state the dates and times that work best for you. Since we anticipate focus group slots filling up quickly, please indicate your first and second choices, and we will attempt to schedule you at one of your preferred times. Thank you for your consideration.

Focus Group Dates:

Spring 2010 New Courses in Marketing

MKT 4540 Branding

Professor Steve Gold

MW 9:05am – 10:20am

Branding is an important topic for all students of marketing. The course is a new elective for the Advertising and Marketing Communications track and the Marketing track within the major. It introduces the student to the process of transforming a product into a brand. Through a combination of real world examples, individual weekly assignments and a theoretical understanding of the branding process, the course will help the student understand the importance of branding and comprehend the complexity of the process.

Prerequisite: MKT 3000

MKT 4171 Public Relations

Professor Bret Tesman

TTH 4:10pm – 5:25pm

A new elective course for students in the Advertising and Marketing Communications track and the Marketing track. It surveys the essentials of public relations practice, including an analysis of the many publics with which an organization must concern itself, and the communications tools available to fulfill public relations objectives. The course stresses communication theory, the principles and processes of public opinion formulation, and case analysis of practical public relations problems.

Pre- or corequisites: MKT 3000 and 3520.

MKT 4530 Selected Topics in Marketing: Psychology of Decision Making

Professor Eleonora Curlo

TTH 11:10am – 12:25pm

Offered for the first time, this is a fascinating survey course for all students, regardless of their major, that examines psychological models and approaches relevant to decision making by consumers and managers. Topics include normative approaches such as expected utility theory, and descriptive accounts such as prospect theory, as well as other patterns of intuitive judgment and heuristics. The course relies on discussion of decision models and applications, readings, exercises, and in-class analysis of cases. Through exercises and experiments, students will develop skills for individual decision-making as well as appreciation of competitive and cooperative decision contexts.

Pre- or corequisite: MKT 3000.

The CUNY Ultimate Frisbee Team AND Club was started this semester by Cliff Pysher (Macaulay Hunter). Since its founding in late September, the club has grown rapidly and spread from its roots in Hunter to Baruch, Queens, City, and Brooklyn (and wants to spread into Lehman and CSI as well!).

The club has a weekly throw around every Friday in Central Park but wants to spread to Queens and Brooklyn Campuses if more members join from those campuses (not to mention the same applies for Lehman and CSI). In addition to this throw around (which will take a break in the Winter), the club periodically holds Throwing Workshops and Fundamentals Workshops. And starting in the Spring, the club is going to support SCHOOL SPECIFIC throw arounds (for example, a Queens-only practice in addition to the CUNY throw around) to allow even more people to conveniently take part.

Throughout its development, the club has looked towards its Macaulay members to lead in the organization and administration of the club. Emily Monaco of Macaulay Queens, Ilyas Frenkel of Macaulay Baruch, and Cliff Pysher of Macaulay Hunter…just to name a few. This semester, the club is looking to expand even further and wants to create a CUNY Ultimate League that hopes to spread school spirit through fun and friendly competition between the various Macaulay schools! In a spirit that looks firstly towards inclusiveness and secondly towards competition, the club hopes to field a team to represent each of the seven macaulay schools and host not only an end of the year tournament/championship, but possibly also an entire season!

If all this is intimidating you, the key to this club (and its unbridled growth) is that it is ALL INCLUSIVE. If you want to be a part of the fledgling but competitive CUNY Ultimate Team, they want you. If you think that is too intense but want to play for your school team in the CUNY Ultimate League, they want you! If you don’t have time for this or do not feel ready for it and just want to learn the sport and have a little exercise every week, they want you!! If you are too focused on work and internships and other commitments to do even this, and you just want a place to wind down at the end of the week, they want you!!! And finally, if you have no interest in frisbee whatsoever but for some odd reason that no one can explain you just love administrative duties for a noble cause, the club wants you!!!! If you are interested in any manner, they want you and want to foster that interest.

And if you are still hesitant, still scared of any sort of time commitment, let me quote verbatim Franklin Roosevelt…”The only thing we have to fear is losing out on the chance to play Ultimate Frisbee.” William Wallace said it best, while being tortured by his English captors shortly before beheading when asked to cry for mercy he pulled a fast one and yelled, “FRISSSSSBBEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!” Such passion is exactly what the club hopes to foster here at CUNY, here at Macaulay, and at each and every school within it.

If you are interested, please email Cliff Pysher at cpysher@europe.com and he will be more than thrilled to answer any of your questions and give you any information you might need.

Michael Sandel is one of Harvard’s most revered professors. He has just published a new book, Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do? (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2009). The book and Sandel’s lectures are the focus of a new PBS TV series; hence a series of public interviews (Today Show, Charlie Rose, etc.), a major piece in the New York Times (on September 25), and a national speaking tour that includes Baruch.

Sandel will speak on Thursday, November 19, at 7 pm in Mason Hall.

Sandel’s presentation, which is co-sponsored by the Provost’s Office and by The Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity, is free and open to the public. Please come and please RSVP…
