Woman’s Rights
Throughout this course we have seen woman gaining power and presence in the United States. Above is an image of a woman casting a vote. Woman’s suffrage lead to the 19th Amendment which declared that no state or federal government can deny a citizen to vote base on sex. Although many woman didn’t believe their say would amount to much this would slowly change throughout history as woman had more presence and dominance in society, government, and the workforce.
Above is the famous piece propaganda from WWII. As you know it is to encourage the female involvement in the workforce. WWII was a time where woman were leaving the household and picking up jobs that males had to leave behind when heading overseas. This was the spark of woman in the workforce which gave woman a sense of fulfillment and presence.
I chose this graph to show the percentage of woman making up the workforce from 1964 to 2009. There has been a steady increase in the percentage of the workforce made up by woman in the United States. In 2009 woman made up for 49.8% and today after the economic downturn woman have now become the majority in the workforce, becoming in many cases the top earner, or “breadwinner.”

“I’ve found the job where I fit best!”

This picture was created by George Rapp in 1943. This poster shows a head to shoulder shot of a woman operating a machine that is part of World War II production effort. This picture shows that women are happy to work and help with the war instead of staying home and be housewives.

Woman Populist Mary Elizabeth Lease
Mary Elizabeth Lease was a female populist who helped assemble and gather farmers to join the populist movement. She was famous for her speeches with famous quotes such as the one located underneath the picture to the left. She was an influential and famous woman who helped push and further the populist movement.
Mary Elizabeth Lease joined the populist party because during the 1880′s and 1890′s, there was economic insecurity for cotton farmers and sharecroppers due to falling cotton prices. The populist came to be from the Farmers’ Alliance which served to provide the financial security for farmers by raising the prices of crops back up. Mary E. Lease then joined and became a vital part of the alliance to protect and boost farmers’ and laborer’s economic well-being.
If I could ask Mary E. Lease two questions today, they would have to be
- How did it feel being a vital part of a well-known and impactful movement in a time period when many women weren’t even allowed to vote yet?
- Being a lawyer, wouldn’t it have been in your best interest to not support the populist movement, why did you decide to join and make such an impact that you’ve became one of the figureheads of the movement?
