McCarthyism sprung out mainly from the post-war actions of newly elected senator Joesph McCarthy. Senator McCarthy claimed that there were more than 200 communists working for the United States government. He without evidence, accused hundreds of government employees of being communists. These accusations without evidence led to trials which ultimately led to people losing their jobs, their careers and even their freedom. McCarthyism was a widespread social and cultural phenomenon that affected all levels of society.
Without McCarthyism America would not be as skeptical as it is today. McCarthyism forced Americans to question everyone, to always suspect the unexpected; That the nice neighbors next door may be undercover communists. McCarthyism encouraged an age of uncertainty and skepticism. Overall I feel America would be a better place without McCarthyism.
