Fight to Speak

Some people would caracterize World War II as a “Good War.” They would say that we were fighting for our four freedoms. Those freedoms would be freedom of worship, freedom from fear, freedom of speech, and freedom from want.  This picture depicts fighting for freedom of speech.  The man in the picture is standing up to say what he needs to say.

I believe that this document is effective at portraying World War II as a war worth fighting for. Its effective because it made Americans mad that other countries were denying citizens freedom of speech. Germany had a dictatorship where citizens didn’t have a say in what the government did. Germany also violated peoples freedom of speech by burning books believed to be “Un-German”.

  2. The picture depicts freedom of speech which was one of the 4 freedoms that was used to help garner support for the war. These freedoms were important to the Americans because it contrasted them from the Nazi Germans who oppressed these basic freedoms. It can be implied that if America lost they would lose these freedoms and therefore must fight to protect them. This picture is effective because unlike WWI, the government allowed citizens to maintain their freedom of speech even during war.
