The original date of production of this video is unknown. This was a time when fundamentalist and modernist came out and fought for their religious beliefs. Modernists defined Christianity by combining science and religion, where as, fundamentalist viewed dropping of traditional values and liberated social norms as a threat. In this video clip, Billy Sunday, a baseball player who became a preacher, is giving a speech about alcohol. Large number of people gathered to listen to Billy Sunday preach about Darwinism, prohibition, and so on.
This video is very effective in capturing the historical change occurring at the time because it is direct footage of one of the eras most prominent social figures. Billy Sunday was a huge advocate of the return to moral, Christian society and preached against this new society where drinking, promiscuous behavior, and concepts like evolution were so widely accepted. He viewed modern American Society to be the antithesis to the world God created, and embodied a large group of people, and indeed a whole movement, advocating these beliefs.
A source that can be used to cross-check is our textbook. Foner mentions Sunday in our textbook as “the most flamboyant apostle” of the fundamentalist movement. His speech here emulates the thinking of fundamentalists at the time and, in combination with the context given in the textbook, we can really see what exactly the historical implications were of the movement.
