This video contains photographs, poems, songs and illustrations from the period of the Harlem Renaissance, with works from the famous poet, Langston Hughes. During the 1920s, the black population in New York severely increased due to a lot of blacks leaving the South. Harlem became the home to many blacks who moved from the South and blacks who had immigrated from the West Indies. Harlem became a cultural community that thrived in the arts. There were poets, painters, novelists and entertainers and for the first time ever, blacks were given roles in Broadway shows. Blacks created their own independent expression for themselves, separate to that of whites. The Harlem Renaissance gave birth to some of the most talented people and allowed for blacks to create and thrive within their own culture and community.

a) How effective is the video in capturing the essence of the historical change depicted? b) What other sources could be used to cross-check the accuracy of the video in representing this change?
I believe this video is extremely effective and captures the essence of the historical change at the time. The word renaissance means the rebirth of art. In this video it contains many illustrations, songs, art pieces, etc. Of course there might be more artwork, poems and such, but this video definitely explains the change that was going on at the time. Harlem became an area for blacks who enjoyed the arts. There are sources I believe that could be use to cross check the accuracy of the video A good source to check the accuracy of the video would probably be an encyclopedia or some sort of book in regards of the Harlem renaissance or perhaps a text book that talks about the history of America more specific, new york during the 1920′s.
