Batteries

by Roger Szlatiner

I’ve noticed that we really don’t talk a lot about batteries and how to recycle them, so I tried to look into it. Yes there is a lot of recycling programs for batteries out there and even New York State has stringent laws regarding it.

At first i didn’t know how much waste was produced and how many battery types there were. I also didn’t know that we ARE allowed to just throw away regular AA batteries, since they do not contain any of the 6 elements that the RoHS has deemed ‘not allowed’. Yet there are several others (I.E. cell phone and laptop batteries.)

There’s a slew of information out there on how it is claimed, recycled and resent into the market. It is a very profitable industry as well too, especially if the companies that make them (I.E. Gillette) recycle them as well.
