Arik Hesseldahl posted a blog in All Things Digital about an effort by IBM to use cloud computing to monitor and analyze power usage in homes. The effort is in the UK and may include telecoms, Telefoncia, BT and Vodafone. It’s a new field for telecoms for machine-to-machine computing.
The effort is one link in a chain to create a smart grid. IBM also has a smart grid project in Malta that started in February 2009.
As a side note, I wonder whether the AT&T deal with Vodafone had some of this machine-to-machine communication in mind.
