IBM is working in conjunction with utility companies in Florida and the Carolinas to implement a smart grid that can provide electricity to 3.1 million people and save 15% energy. IBM has been testing this technology for the past 4 years and will concentrate on voltage management, electricity distribution and system upgrades.
This is great news for the US. Compared to other countries, the US seems to be lacking in terms of Green technology and energy. This is the first step in achieving a fantasy world described by Friedman. Once the base is laid out correctly, Smart Black Boxes (as Friedman describes them) can then power appliances and charge electric cars when energy is least expensive. As this technology is implemented in more and more large cities, we will see a drastic reduction in energy usage as it will affect more people in densely crowded areas.
