3rd workshop

I was in the Job search strategies held by the STARR. The instructors gave lectures about how undergraduate and graduated students to find suitable jobs under the current circumstances. This workshop shocked me a lot, I found myself too optimistic to get employments, I haven’t realized what the harshness is, and I learned much from the workshop.

They lectured the topics with using slides, it made the sources and data more reliable to me. The most interesting topic for me was that the ways to get employments inUnited States, the instructors gave out couple suggestions based on the terrible circumstances right now. First they advised us to know clear about our strongest points, but never to limit our job opportunities must to be relevant to our majors in college. For example, investment banks maybe recruit some people with BS or BA degree, there is no policy says that banker must be a BBA person. Additional, in cases that we do not find appropriate jobs in NYC, never ever limit ourselves, we can make long term sights to expanse, like states out of NYS, even other countries.

I found these suggestions so helpful and awaked me, I have never thought about to leave NYC for better employments, I do not mean I love this place, I just don’t feel like to live in another strange place ever. But now I have to rethink on this issue, going out for more chances is obviously more popular recently, even though I will leave our families and friends behind, I will still choose to get a better opportunity, and people will support me to do so.

college experience final on me returing back to nothing

Filed under: Uncategorized — kunchen @ 10:41 pm

It is boring that each of you always complains of the difficulty of getting a good GPA in college. For me, I am disappointed at my peers in this college rather than myself. I went to Forest Hills high, where I still find some smart kids, and they are not as gross and shallow as some of you. I know it will be too rude towards you to point out his or her name so I will refrain from tell on him or her to others. I know it is hypocritical of me to complain of your bad English grammar but one you will feel ashamed of it. I know it is arrogant to say Baruch College is beneath me, although I am used to be promising and much be expected of. In the high school, I commit a biggest sin in selling myself to the devil for some knowledge. It seems to me that no of you at least this freshman seminar is familiar with the fable of the musician Faust. But I basically did the same thing and now I am the damned. In the college, we need to find something, by which we can be dazed. Bur let us be chaste, never to seduce damsels, for I was punished. we must have true affection to them by getting favor with them. By the way Baruch College makes me humble, less prejudiced against the poor somehow but strengthens my determination to be again the poor.

I am of the Junker. I was supportive of a lost cause, which cost me my life, only to find myself lost everything. But this history that by birth I was a Junker cannot be erased forever. Believing in class division, I on behalf of the good bygone bourgeois will never tolerate admit and accept any proletarian. With the land of Prussian beinf stained with the pure, crimson blood of the Junker, I will resuscitate for sure.

workshop 4th (make up for the second one) Sidney Mishkin Gallery

Filed under: Uncategorized — kunchen @ 11:14 pm

Soobin certainly visited Sidney Mishkin Gallery and write pretty positive about Milt Hinton’s art, namely, his photographs. But I somehow want to downplay the values of them in that I find them too down-to-earth and not aesthetically beautiful. George Eliot once art says should be realistic, serving also the common and those who in the dark. I favor the dangerous but seductive ideas proposed by Oscar Wilde that holds art is useless and maybe immoral. Hinton photo are realistic and maybe even morally right but not beautiful in a way  they mostly depict the struggles of music artists , uplift us but lack the very sense of beauty. In addition, they are also not so colorful  (I know I should blame this for the lack of technology advancement at that time) that they rarely linger on in my memory. But when I juxtapose them with the photos of a young Jodie Foster, I must confess to the fact that what is idealistic and perfect endure in my mind longer than what is some ugly but realistic. While she is not as pretty as she used to be, her young and glamorous beauty as an object to be observed like a nymph does give a strong impression on me and others , solely for she was beautiful. The contents of a photo are much more important than the technique it is taken in determining the value of it. I do not want to be provocative to photographers. But in light of the fact photo do not need as much photographers as objects, especially in the Age of Technology those days ; I favor the ostensive beauty of the photos of a young Jodie Foster

“3rd Workshop” – Resources that Baruch College provide to help freshmen survive

* Because I was unable to attend the 3rd workshop, I was given the opportunity to write a blog post about a topic that is relate to freshmen students so this post is irrelevant to the 3rd workshop.

The transitioning from high school and college is drastic. As an ex- high school student, he or she expects to be pampered because he or she is a freshman. Freshmen are considered “babies”. Unfortunately, once you enter college, the meaning of freshmen changes. Being a freshman means taking the first step to adulthood. Baruch helps freshmen survive college. There is a writing center that offers students help in editing their papers. Freshmen are always welcome to receive help. The Student Academic Consulting Center (SACC) offers tutorial services for freshmen who are in need of help. Next to Baruch’s vertical campus, there is the library. The library has 4 floors that consist of study rooms. The study rooms are available for study groups. There are rows of computer on the sixth floor of the library building. Baruch offers a lot of resources for freshmen to take advantage of so they could have a smoother year.

3rd workshop

I was late to register for the writing resume workshop. But I still went to learn about it. It took place in Baruch College. The instructors handed out a booklet about resumes. It talked about different types of resumes. Since I never wrote a resume before, this information was very helpful. They had different examples of resumes that were also helpful to me. I never knew there was so much information needed in a resume. The instructor also said that having a professional email is important because the employer will not take you seriously. For example, sexilips123@whatever.com is definitely not a professional email. The words section in the resume booklet was the most interesting thing that attracted me. “There were words that we could use in our resume depending on our experiences, and our majors. We use the word “help” a lot. Instead of that, we could use aid, facilitate, provide, and support. It sounds more interesting that way.” This quote made me realize that I use help word a lot instead of other words. This workshop was very helpful and interesting.

community service

I went to the Breast cancer walk event. It took place in Central Park on Sunday November 16th. There were so many people participating in this event. It showed how much people care and support the people with the breast cancer. Many people were wearing pink to show their participation. It seemed so beautiful how so many people walking in pink. I was glad that I have attended this event because it made me see and care for the issues in society. I never cared about the community services before. I never cared to attend one. I learned that it is important to show the community that there are people who care about certain issues. Now, I see myself staying involved in the community during my college and adult years. It was a great experience and I loved it.

Now it is almost the end of my first term in college. In the beginning everything was new to me and I had to get used to them. Everything was fine except the classes. I made new friends and experienced new things. But the classes I had some difficulties with the classes I took. They weren’t that easy as I thought.

What I would do differently during my first semester if I could do it all again is the lateness. I was always late to my classes. That caused me to miss some important things in classes. I also did all my work at the last moment. I would like to do that differently too. I didn’t get satisfied grades on any of my work that I did at the last moment.

The one thing that changed me is that I worked hard. To be honest I never worked hard in any of my classes in high school. I was fine without working hard. But it was different for college. I actually had to study for my tests. It all showed whether I studied or not on my test grade.

I am actually satisfied with my first term in college. I am looking forward to my next term in Baruch. I want to experience more new things and excited about it. Even though the classes might be hard I am ready to face them.

the 3rd workshop

I attended the workshop “EOC Job$mart Panel: Networking: Is it who or what you know?” on December 6. It was a really useful workshop. I learned networking is really important in today’s world. And I began to realize it is a true fact that most jobs found today are through the networking.

There were two guest speakers in this event. They were Christine Ippolito and Jodi Brockington. They both have very successful businesses. Christine is one of the founders of Compass Workforce Solutions. And Jodi found the NIARA consulting.

In this workshop, they answered many questions about the networking. For example, when one asked how to build network, they answered there are three main ways. One is the family and friend, so it is really important to make more friends, they may give you information about the jobs, or invite you to work with their company. The second one is the school. As we all know, many companies come to our school to look for people, so school is really a good place to start build your network with the companies. They also mentioned we can find network through charities, such as library, community service. We will have a chance to meet more people there. So it is important that we should be more involved in the community.

They told us when we went to a workshop, conference or any events. If the speaker is the one you really wanted to know, there are many strategies for you to be known by the speaker. You should try to be there early, so you may have an opportunity to talk to him individually. You should also try to sit in the front, and try to do some gesture or express your emotions when the speaker was looking at you. It shows you are interested at what the speaker says. You can also send the speaker emails, or post on the speakers’ Facebook even if it is just one or two sentences.  These things will really be helpful for you to be remembered by others.

They also mentioned that most jobs today are posted online first. And I didn’t realize how important the website linkedin.com is until they talked about it. They told us most companies today look for people through linkedin.com, they will search the key terms in this website, and look at these people’s profile, so it is really important to have a linkedin.com account, otherwise they will not be able to find you. And we should be careful about what we posted in this website. We should post the real information there.

Although it is just one hour, I felt I really learned a lot from it. I realized the networking is really important today. We should all try to be more socialized in our community.

My first semester at Baruch College almost has done. now I am trying to summarize my first semester. In the beginning of the school. I felt so  excited because I could learn more knowledge and know more people. The the college is completely different with the high school. Professors’ teaching style is more  open than that of the high school teacher. I have more free time. As the  time past, I find out that the college become more and more difficult.

The philosophy is a difficult course. this course requires us to keep thinking thinking and thinking. it’s hard for me to follow the professor’s idea. also the reading materials challenge my poor reading ability. they are so complicated to read for me. finally, I did not drop this course because I don’t want take again. maybe someday, my reading ability be improved, I would like to learn more about philosophy. It is a really  thoughtful course.

I think the freshman seminar is really helpful. It tried to help us transit from high school to the college. It help us adjust the college culture. It  teach us how to deal with the college essay and how to do the research. through the freshman seminar I know more about the college and help me have a good experience in the college.

in the college, one of my expectations is building up friendship. friends are important to me in the college. when I was in trouble with the classes. I always can get help from my friends. Also the time management is a challenge. I hope I will manage my time much better next semester.

First, I really do not know what should I write.

My third workshop is Job Search Strategies.  This workshop taught us about how to get job in the future.

I learned a lot, for example In present time, the economic is in the bad time, we might take 3 to 6 months to get job after we graduate, sometime it even might take double time.  We need to understand ourself first, them the environment which is best fit for us, and we should also understand the current market.  I also learned that the importance of Networking.  And we have a lot of resource that we can use.  We can use those resources to research market, it is very helpful for us to find a job.

I got more strategies which help me to get job in the future.  For example, we can consider new growing sectors, we can expand the geographical area of our search, we can apply to government positions, we can go to graduated school, etc.  The most important thing is that do some research about ourself, every skill and interest we have, every value we believe, every personality we are, those are all helpful to find a job.

I am going to attend more workshop which can help me in the future in different way.
