Get A Fresh Start

This was an academic enrichment workshop held early in the semester. It was the first one I went to, held in the Academic Advisement Center. There was a large number of people there, so it wasn’t quite possible to ask any personal questions relating to school. There wasn’t really anything learned from this workshop, due to large amount of freshmen crowding in one place. The workshop itself was short, where as afterwards everyone crowded all around the fifth floor to get their signatures.

Career Fair Success Strategies

Ok guys, so this is my last post EVER! (yay me). moving on..

Title: Career Fair Success Strategies

Date/Time:  Thurs, 11/19 @ 12:30-2:00

Category: Career Exploration

This workshop was aimed at preparing  job searchers for the job/internship fair that was held today (oops, according to the time, it was actually yesterday-i always write these blogs really late/really early). Two guys from Verizon came and gave pointers about job searching and marketing yourself as an asset to companies. They also addressed how to approach those tough questions that are thrown at you (like “What’s your biggest weakness?”). I think they were really helpful and exposed me to a lot I didn’t know. It was very relevent and helped me figure out how to build my resume starting now in freshman year. They also spoke about networking, which was pretty helpful. Too bad I didn’t go to the fair. I would’ve, but it was waayy last minute and I wasn’t ready for all that. I picked this workshop because the movie that I was originally going to see magically disappeared from the list of freshman workshops. This workshop exceeded my expectations. It was really lengthy and took up almost my entire break btwn PUB and PSY but, what can I do? It was the last workshop I will ever be required to do (I hope). I would definitely recommend it for someone actually going to the job fair, but I wouldn’t make it a requirement.

Random sidenote: Robert signed for the THIRD time in my book (I guess that’s good in case i lose the planner b/c he saw i completed it)! He basically owns it. I swear he walks through walls. I just hope I don’t run into him in the girls bathroom one day. That would be a tad awkward. lmao

I wanna wish everyone good luck and a pleasant-ish registration. It’s been a good semester.

“jsoler” out.

Basic Interviewing Techniques

On November 12, I attended a workshop called Basic interviewing techniques. During this workshop, the speaker basically went through the interviewing process and gave us some suggestions. I found the speech interesting. I didn’t realize how important my socks were when going in for an interview. There were so many little things that the average person might not realize, that I know now, that will help me in the future. For instance, before an interview you should come up with questions to ask your interviewer to seem interested. The only question in my head during an interview is “When do I start?” but she kindly explained to me that, that might not be the best question to ask.

Mercedes Matters Art Gallery

The paintings of the late modern artist Mercedes Matters were on display this week and i took the opportunity to go. I thought i twas very interesting how her paintings evolved over the course of her life. Even though the basic concepts stay the same, she still retained the use of shapes such as triangles and rectangles she got more confident and was more messy with her brush strokes. Also as she got older her canvas’ got larger.

Impression Management

The impression management workshop seemed pretty self explanatory, most of what the presenter said seemed like common knowledge.  Dress appropriately to create the first image that people want to make of you, and speak accordingly and make sure there is eye contact with the person that you are communicating with.  I believe that the presentation wasn’t very well organized, because the presenter could have made many of his points with half the time that was actually taken.  Instead, he seemed to ramble on, and quite a few people actually fell asleep as well.  It was good as a review, but the presentation was way too long.

stress and anxiety

during this workshop, we did a exercise that i already did in psych class. we used a raisin and we had to feel it with our 5 senses…in the end, he told us to eat it and i didnt want to cause it felt disgusting. then they put me to sleep again like Albright did in psych class. i hate it when they do that cause i actually fall asleep and like i dont want to wake up anymore after that. it was a pretty good workshop because i was able to sleep but it also gave me some stress relieving tips like just taking a minute or two to relax muscles. i think it was a useful workshop that i would probably need in the future to relieve stress:D

Stress and Anxiety

This workshop I think was very helpful and right on time because we have so many exams and assignments due in the next couple of weeks that an exercise to reduce stress is very useful.  The first counselor introduced the concept of mindfulness which is an awareness that comes from purposely paying attention in the current moment and not judging the things you observe.  He explained a couple of exercises to develop mindfulness. One was the Five Things: See, Hear, Feel, this is the one I like most because its flexible meaning I could do anytime anywhere  I try to practice every time I remember. It which consists of picking five things you could see and describe them to yourself like if is something you have never seem before you could concentrate on the texture, color, shape, etc. then pick five different sounds that that are currently happening, and finally five things you could feel for example your weight on your feet, or the weight of your bag on your shoulder.    The second counselor introduced a form of assertiveness training called DEAR MAN it’s for when you want to ask for help and do not know how, and also when you want to say no and do not want to ruin a relationship by doing so.  Also he thought us a Progressive Muscle Relaxation this exercise consists on relaxing your muscles to get your mind to relax.

Math 2003 Workshop

The person who was teaching this workshop knew his stuff.  It was two hours and I was awake through all of it.  It was amazing how easy this guy made it seem.  In my one hour and forty minute class, I can’t keep my eye open.  Yet, I was actually involve in this workshop.  We went through almost everything in chapter two.  Many things that I didn’t understand were covered and I finally got them.  I learned more about derivatives, limits, domains, and more.  It was a very good workshop.  Hopefully, it helps me pass math.

Your Life, Your Money

I really enjoyed this workshop.  I thought it was a lecture but it turned out to be a movie.  It was sponsered by HSBC, which is my favorite  and soon to be bank.  It was made by PBS which I love since childhood.  The movie is about informing young people how to manage their money so that they don’t have a personal financial crisis.  It was very informative and it was very interesting.  Then there was a panel discussion for any questions.  I thought it was very well organize and that is the reason it became my favorite workshop of this semester.  Also, they gave us a lot of free stuff.  They gave me a usb bracelet, which was the highlight of my day.
