Job Fair Prep

On Thursday, November 19, I went to a career exploration workshop called Job Fair Prep, from 12:30 to 2:00 PM. When I got to the first floor multipurpose room, there was line of people waiting to sign in and be seated. The place was crowded with many freshmen, sophomores, and a few juniors and seniors. Two men from Verizon Company came to talk to us about how to prepare ourselves for the Job Fair held today, Friday November 20th. There were packets handed out that was very useful on how to prepare yourselves for interviews. The packet had examples on what question would be asked and a few example answers, formats for resume and “Thank You” letters. The men from the Verizon Company also told us to always be prepared to “sell yourself”, even in simple places such as elevators because you never know who you might meet. They told us what information to include when we introduce ourselves and to keep it under 2 minutes. Always keep eye contact and use a confident voice, it shows that you are engaged and strong in the conversation and forces other people to listen to what you say. Although this Workshop was quite long compared to the other workshops I had ever been to, I learned a lot from this workshop and I definitely recommend it. This workshop helps us understand the working environment and how to prepare ourselves for it. It helped me know what I have to do in order to prepare for an interview and how to stand out compare to the rest of the competitors fighting for the position.

Suicide Prevention

Today on November 19th 2009 I attended the suicide prevention workshop.  This workshop took off with a 30 minute documentary that was created by students in various school around the country.  These students have either attempted suicide or have a friend that took their life through suicide.  After watching this video for just 5 minutes I can say that I am deeply convinced that no matter what, it is not worth it to take your own life despite your problems.  There are many ways around it as we learned through the discussion after class.  I also felt very secure knowing that there are counselors at any time during the day in case I am feeling depressed or very stressed out from my school work.  There were many students who actually faced depression in the past and as I heard their opinions I know for sure I am never going to commit suicide.  I recommend everyone no matter what to see what this workshop is all about as it taught me the importance of life and the importance of what it means to be understanding of the world around us.

The Truth About Suicide

On Thursday, November 19th, I attended a Student Life workshop about the truth of suicude. In this workshop, the speaker was an advisor who helps students cope with their problems in Baruch. He explained to us, that if we ever needed to talk to someone about anything, he is there to help. This really made me happy because now I know that if I’m having any problems adjusting to college that I can go to him. Next, he showed us a 30 minute film about the friends and relatives of people who have committed suicide or attempted to commit suicide before. This really opened up my eyes on this topic, because I learned that suicide is extremely common with young adults in college. I thought this was a really sad workshop and the video really got me to think about how terrible and scary suicide is. It was also nice to know that colleges are taking more action into suicide prevention.

Art Gallery: Mercedes Matter

On Thursday, November 17, I went to “A Retrospective Exhibition” by Mercedes Matter at the Sidney Miskin Gallery. When I got there at 12:40, a line was already starting to form. The gallery was small but was very organized and showed how the artist’s work changed as she grew older. Our tour guide was really nice and told us a lot of details on each painting. Our tour guide also told us how Mercedes started to paint at a very young age and used her own way of style to portray a sense of art. In Mercedes paintings, it consist a lot of lines, space, colors, textures, and shapes such as triangles, to create her painting. After the camera was created, Mercedes wanted to create something that can not be seen from these pictures. Mercedes creates her own reality by using visual ideas rather than painting a more realistic photo that is seen in a picture. She did not really care about details that much and just painted whatever image she imagines. The tour took about 15 minutes since there was a really long line of students. Within these 15 minutes I enjoyed looking at Mercedes’ style of painting, it showed how different artists pictures artwork and how each style is unique. It also helped me a lot in relating what I am learning in my art class and compare the differences of every artists that I had been seeing in museums.

Basic Interviewing

On November 12th, 2009 I attended a Career workshop that taught the students what to look for when trying to accomplish a interview. The speaker was an advisor from the STARR center within Baruch and gave us personal experience on what she realized as she had more interviews with others. I learned the inside basics of interviewing and what to do for an interview beforehand. There were not alot of people in the workshop but that was due to the many career workshops during the month. The workshop was insightful and helped enlighten various questions about interviews that many people had. The workshop could have had more personal experience than slides because the experiences the speaker told us were more insightful than the slides that were being shown as she speak. That is my opinion however. Overall, the workshop was helpful and the speaker told the students that there was an advanced workshop continuing the interview topic and also the services that the STARR center provides tot he students.

Art Gallery Tour

I attended a gallery tour at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery. The tour had art pieces painted by the artist, Mercedes Matter. We saw many abstract pieces of art and how her artwork grew as she grew in her life. She was an artist of modernism and showed abstract paintings of a table setting with fruit. The tour guide happened to be an art teacher in Baruch and told us of her experience of trying to recreate the art piece  to her class. The reason for this was because she wanted to show her class if it was possible to draw the painting at the angle shown in the painting. The workshop was interesting and I learned many things about Mercedes Matter. The artwork was very intriguing and showed a good example of modern abstract art. The tour could have been longer since the room was very small and there were not that many paintings. There could be more time exploring the workshop and less time of the explanation behind the artist. Overall, the workshop was interesting and it showed a good example of abstract art and how one artist’s perspective of the art grew as her life continued.

Freshman Reception

Despite a huge crowd of freshman gathered all in one room, and the fact that each counselor  had limited time to help each student, the freshman reception gave me plenty of information i needed on classes and the college life. They gave me a lot of advice on scheduling and managing my time sufficiently to get good results in all my classes. Although I only spent a short amount of time, probably 3-4 minutes with a counselor, I felt even more comfortable afterward around Baruch knowing more about what I needed to do to become a more successful student. The refreshments weren’t half bad either. Regardless of the short amount of time I spent there, my questions seemed to have been answered. The results of coming out of that room just made waiting in that line for about 30 minutes a whole lot more worth it.

Tour of Baruch Library

The Baruch library is filled with an enormous variety of books, computers and faculty members that are sure to help you with whatever you need for school. The first floor was interesting. It consisted of dozens of computers in which Baruch students use to complete papers and essays for class. The second floor consisted of hundreds and hundreds of books. These books are  filled with so much different information that is sure to help any student out. The check out process is pretty neat too since it is internet based. Students go online and search for a certain topic on what they are researching and the computer gives them a variety of books of which they can use for their papers. The cool part is that all the CUNY libraries are connected so if you cannot find a book you need in the Baruch Library, there are 18 other options to go to to get whatever you need. The library is  very convenient for anyone’s college needs.

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter

Today, November 17, 2009, I attended a Gallery Tour of Mercedes Matter. The tour was supposed to begin at 1p.m and end at 2p.m. When I arrived at the 22nd street building at around 12:40 p.m., I saw many people already waiting on line before me. By 1 o’clock, the lobby was filled with students on line to attend the workshop. We were sent inside the gallery in groups of twenty-five. The woman who was speaking to us about the gallery told us many things about Mercedes Matter. Before this workshop, I had never heard of this artist before. As I saw her artworks from a young age, around 15, until she was in her forty’s, I could see a change in her style. Most of her artworks were made with oil on canvas. Matter used techniques to not only convey what the artwork was as a whole, but also show the expressions in her art. She used many lines and used bright colors such as red, orange and yellow to express excitement and happiness. Alternatively, she used dark color such as blue, green, and brown to convey a gloomy and dull picture. Lastly, I learned that Matter avoided the use of details. Instead, she drew vague images. I thought that this workshop was interesting since I learned about someone I never knew about. This workshop also helped me link theories that I learned in my Art History class.

Gallery Tour: Mercedes Matter

Today, November 11, I attended my last and final workshop for my Freshman Seminar class. This workshop filled in the Arts at Baruch requirement and was held on 135 East 22nd St from 1pm-2pm. This workshop was a basic gallery tour held in the Baruch campus. The gallery had artworks created by Mercedes Matter. I found this workshop boring because I did not really understand what the tour guide was informing us about.  However, I learned something interesting at the gallery tour which was that Mercedes Matter did not paint every single detail of the object.  Instead Mercedes Matter painted a very broad and general perspective of the object.  The paintings had a variety of colors and lines that would outline  the artwork and give it tone and structure.  Other than that, the tour basically included most Mercedes Matter’s artworks.  The gallery was split into two sections which consisted of her early work to her most recent work.
