Basic Interviewing (Career Exploration)

This workshop was very straight forward. The speaker walked us through a basic interview and advised us on how to succeed. I think that, by far, I have learned the most from this workshop. I learned a lot of new tips and strategies that I will absolutely need in the near future. Everything was easy to follow and all of the examples we heard can be used in order to increase our chances of getting a job. Overall, the workshop was great and informative.

Internship and Goal Setting 10/22

This so far has been the best workshop that I have attended out of any other workshop. Since I came to Baruch, people have always been stressing “INTERNSHIPS! INTERNSHIPS! INTERNSHIPS!” And this workshop gave me a place to find out about how to start with finding one. The speaker, the director of internships at STARR, thoroughly went through the process of finding internships and making the most of an internship experience. She also gave us a booklet that summarized everything she went over in the workshop, and information on upcoming career fairs and events. Overall, I believe that these career workshops are among the most useful, and that those that are in FRO sections should attend them, and not just to get credit, because everything that you learn in these will help later in life.

Resume Writing

Today was my last Freshman Seminar.  It was a career exploration seminar about writing a resume.  It was very informative, and I learned a lot.  I learned some useful tips about writing resumes, like the fact that it should only be one page.  I also learned about cover letters, which I think will be useful.

personal enrichment

I went to the workshop, Values, Pressure and Choosing a Major. I didn’t understand what was going on. The presentor had a British accent that I couldnt interpret. Throughout the workshop, he kept quoting famous people for a hour and that was pretty much the workshop.

Week to pick classes

So this is the first time we are going to be picking our own scedule. I am probably going to be taking all the basis ‘non major’ related classes to fulfill the requirement. I want most of my classes in the morning, so that way I have so time left to do other things. I wana know how everyone else is going to make up their scedule. Post away.

Freshman Seminar

I thought feshman seminar was a helpful class because it was very insightful, providing useful important that definitely assisted me in the transition to Baruch. Although the class was great, it would have been better if the class was at a later time.

Communications article

Communication skills are the the basis of success in the world in every aspect. From personal relationships to school to the work place, communicating with your parents, your peers and your employers is the key to success. In the last 10 years, the technological advancements have stunted the importance of communicating in children especially. Today texting, gaming, tv, etc has kept kids occupied without direct communication to others. Back in the day, children played outside together, always communicating with eachother. They spent time with family participating in progressive activities. Today children play games online, chat with their friends and do not leave the house to play games. The do not communicate with friends in person, do not stay active with family, and are not very social. The lack of communication leads to many serious problems, including obesity. The young generations are becoming lazy, antisocial, game-aholic who cannot focus in school or simply introduce themselves to others in person.

Art Gallery Tour

On October 14th I attended the Art Gallery Tour that was located in the building towards the 22nd street. It was quite an interesting workshop , due to the fact that it wasn’t any type of a business centered workshop. I managed to see “The Nature of Landscape/ The Nature of Photography”. It was very interesting to venture around looking at these exciting works of arts. It even inspired me to join some sort of photography or art appreciation class.  There was this other picture of purple sky; me and my friend Anna looked at it for at least five minutes straight, it was very amusing, I would love to have that picture as my wallpaper on my computer.  Overall, this was my favorite workshop because it was more relaxing and enjoyable, i cant wait for the next exhibition. I would like to recommend to check out the gallery for all my classmates.

The Nature of Landscaping and Photography

I attended this Arts workshop on Oct. 6. I am actually a photography enthusiast and really enjoy photography. I did not learn much in this workshop because of my previous experience but I was glad to attend and see so many interested faces. Also there was a nice collection of photographs taken by Baruch students. I feel as if the workshop was very well organized because it gave just enough information to intrigue the students, but did not load them up with difficult techniques. It was made to interest the us and it successfully did so. I enjoyed this workshop the most.

The Path Of A Tax Lawyer

On Nov. 19 I attended this Career Exploration Workshop. The guest speaker was tax lawer Sidney Kess, one of the most recognized individuals in the tax industry. He came to speak about his career and how he overcame hardships to get through college and lawschool. It was very funny because the students that organized this workshop wanted to ask Mr. Kess particular questions and he blew them of and spoke about the importance of the involvement in your college. Instead of explaining particular aspects of his career, he focused on reaching out to all of us to explain the importance of family, education and career choice. It was a very light and enriching experience to see an old man speak of his influential life.

Freshman Reception

This workshop took place at the beginning of the semester. It was meant to introduce freshman to Baruch and allow students to interact. Almost every freshman showed up. The whole entrance on to the fifth floor was so packed from the elevators all the way towards the hallway for classes. But some good did come out of it. I got to know the people in my LC better because we stood waiting for so long there was nothing to do but talk and so it allowed us to talk more and become more comfortable with one another. At first I was shy but after being put in that situation I realized how much fun the people in my LC are and I can’t wait for the next semester because sometimes when you’re out of your comfort zone you learn more about yourself and the people around you and then it’s not so new and scary.

Managing Relationships in College

I found this workshop to be the worst workshop that I went to.  First off, the topic of managing relationships was not so appealing to me.  I don’t need advice or tips on how to be socially active.  Second, they basically forced us to interact with eachother and mingle, which was awfully awkward.  Third, everything that the speaker was saying came as common sense or old news to me.  I didn’t enjoy this workshop at all and I’m just glad I got my signature for the credit.

Gallery Tour

The gallery was somewhat interesting.  I mostly just walked around, took a quick peek at each piece and just talked to my friends.  I was really tired and out of it so I didn’t want to stay there long.  I just wanted the signature on my sheet.  But I did see some pieces that were pretty cool.  I always enjoyed going to museums and looking at art.  I love the MoMa and if you didn’t know, CUNY students get to go for free!

Diversity Workshop

The diversity workshop was basically about what its called, diversity.  This workshop talked about how diversity is a positive thing that unites people of different races.  They elaborated on the fact that Baruch is the most diverse college in the nation and that it should not affect how we treat eachother.  I’ve been used to diverse schools because my high school was also very diverse and culturally engaged.

The Changing Nature of Race, Power and Ethnicity in the era of Obama and Sotomayor

I found this to be quite an interesting workshop.  First, there were professors who talked about the issue of race and its effect on people today and how it is changing.  Then, it turned into a group discussion where students talked about their own issues and what they think about race in the world today.  Some students who were sharing their stories really had interesting things to say.  I only came to this workshop at first for the extra credit that my history teacher proposed to us by coming to this workshop, but I later found that it was worthwhile because it somewhat enlightened me.

Career Exploration

This was an ok workshop. I already knew our school was really diverse, coming from a high school which was dominated by Italians, but I didn’t know how diverse we were compared to the rest of the colleges and universities out there. I for one love learning about new cultures, so this workshop kind of made me realize that I have made the right choice on the college I picked. It is also good because this can probably help me later in my career, as I would love to go into a field similar to foreign trade and business.

Club Fair

The club fair was PACKED!  There were a lot of people running around from club to club but there were a lot of people crowding around the dance club.  There were kids dancing in the middle of the crowd and I even got to see 2 of my friends pop and lock.  Although it was hard to see over the many people that were there, it was fun watching my friends, especially when he did the jerk.  I got free thai iced tea by just saying i love thai iced tea to a bunch of sorority girls, how nice.  And towards the end, I signed up for the Japan Club.  But I haven’t showed up to a single one of their club meetings, no time to spare.

Freshman Reception

This workshop was not helfpful whatsoever.  The place was completely packed because they had said they did not expect so many freshmen to show up.  All that happened was we got our sheets signed, got free lemonade and chocolate chip cookies and left.  But hey, I don’t mind, as long as I fulfilled my workshop, I’m satisfied.

Managing Relationships in College

Another seemingly pointless workshop I just went to to get a signature. It was really overcrowded and there was a point where we had to introduce ourselves to someone we had never met before, which is never fun. I for one can’t really stand meeting new people, and when I am somewhere I have never been before I tend to just keep to myself, so this workshop was especially awkward. I’m pretty much a loner.

Sprucing up your Resume

I’ve been in college for a little less than a full semester and already I know that the most frequent line I’m destined to hear in my upcoming years in college is “It will look good on your resume.” Ahh. Yes. Of course. The all important resume. You are undoubtedly a slave to your resume. No matter how good looking you are you will still be secondary in importance compared to how impressive your resume is. As sad as how significant a piece of paper with a list of accomplishments is, we must still nonetheless abide by the omnipresent rules of the working world as we are now officially its’ tools. Just kidding, of course. But then again even if I’m kidding it doesn’t mean that its not true. The workshop on Teusday, led by a young woman from STARR, was intended to instill into our minds early on the importance of remaining competitive in the workforce by enhancing our resumes to our fullest capacities. And if we failed to do so…well then good luck with that. The woman attempted to outline the basic structure of a typical resume minus a projector to aide her, which was all at once a commendable feat but also detrimental to the overall success of her presentation. The material she covered detailing the bare essentials needing to be included in a resume was both generic and rudimentary. Most students, even the most inexperienced ones, would be able to pick up that type of information given its’ enormous accessibility. The lack of communication between speaker and audience only further undermined the importance and usefulness of the facts and advice being handed out that day. However, I still applaud the speaker’s efforts for attempting to reach across a seemingly indifferent audience without any form of assistance, even though she seemed to come across as overly aggressive at times in her manner of speaking. But I guess being overly persistant gets your message across at certain times. Attending these types of workshops has the potential of filling one with a sense of both anxiety and drive. While it forces you to contemplate your future prospects–When will I get that next internship? or What if I can’t manage that perfect 4.0 GPA–it also puts you into a competitive mindset propelling you towards reaching both your academic and professional goals. Eventually, that resume will be a summation of these achievements. Ultimately, of course these lists of accomplishments are not the be all or end all of who you are. They are not an evaluation of your self-worth. Even after attaining an internal audit internship at KPMG or a leadership position in the student government you are inevitably the same person. Your external accomplishments in no way signify personal progress and whatever emotional growth that you might have undergone beneath the surface can not be objectively displayed on a resume. This is a simply way of exemplifying the ever important realization that the working world does not care about who you are but what you can do for them. It’s a nauseating reality.

Blog in place of Global Awareness

Okay, so here’s my long blog to replace my global awareness workshop.

the five workshops i’ve attended have all been pretty boring. i’ve learned the do’s and don’t’s of google, the way to score a decent internship, and how to and NOT to handle relationships. i’ve seen the art gallery, and i’ve gotten a taste of nearly every club in baruch college. all of this, though, regardless of how boring i may have found it, has enhanced my learning experience more than i may have expected.  as stupid as it sounds, these workshops have helped me learn ways to keep awake and focus my attention on something that may not have caught my interest right away.

i do, however, feel that the club fair was a very useful workshop. the club fair had led me to join clubs that i didn’t even know the school had.  if i did not attend, i would’ve never known we had a music industry club, nor would i have known about our photography club.  it also encouraged me to join two of baruch’s most well-known organizations, WBMB radio and the ticker. both of those clubs are things i truly enjoy being a part of, and i would not be a part of them if i did not attend the club fair.

i also feel that the tour of the mishkin gallery was a great workshop. while it may not be very useful, it is something i definitely enjoyed.  i am a photography minor, which is a form of art, and photography has led me to have a great appreciation for art. i never knew we even had an art gallery, and this workshop showed me something great that i could admire right in our very school.

furthermore, i feel that, overall, the workshops weren’t as terrible as i had anticipated.  as much as i hated some, i did benefit from going to them, and i am very glad that i did.

Gallery Tour

The gallery tour was kind of interesting for me. Ever since I was little I have been one to appreciate art so this workshop wasn’t as boring for me as the other ones where. I used to draw a lot. It was nice to actually look at things rather than listening to someone talk for a long time. However, my main incentive was still to just get a signature.

Your Life Your Money

This was an outstanding workshop. The workshop was hosted by the PBS station and HSBC bank. The whole thing took two hours but it was worth it. I learned so many life learned skills and wisdom dealing with my future with money. How to gain good credit and how to avoid bad credit, and many other I would also list. The speakers were also engaging and there was a 45 min video for the audience which I enjoyed very much and found helpful. At the end of the session they had a raffle for Barnes and Nobles giftcards and I won one. I used the card to buy SAT books and a beginner’s guide to drums for my brothers and got myself a big book of tattoo designs. Pretty awesome.

Obama and Sotomayor

I only went to this because my history teacher was offering extra credit if we went. I remember being at school since 8 in the morning and I really didn’t want to go because I was very tired but I went anyway and sat through it. It was pretty boring and I fell asleep during it. It was also pretty long.
