Mercedes Matters: A Retrospective

On November 17,2009 , I attended the Mercedes Matter exhibition at the Miskin Art gallery.  When I arrived there was a long line  to get into the gallery. The line was moving slowly  and they were only letting like twenty people at a time in the gallery. Me and my friends decided to leave and then come back. When we return to the building, the line had gone down  alot and next thing we knew we were in the gallery. We had to hang up our bags and sign in before the tour started. The tour guide told us about some information about Mercedes Matter. We then saw paintings   in different stages of her life.  She mostly did still life paintings and I found them interesting. The tour then ended pretty quickly.

Question about FRO class

Hi Clemente.

So far I’ve missed one FRO class.  I am also missing one workshop but the only other event for that workshop category is on December 1st and I’d rather turn in my passport earlier instead of rushing through that and risk turning in late.

On blackboard, it says that i have 18/21 possible points.

Based on the information i provided, am I going to be able to rack up enough points?

I would email you to ask but the last time I emailed you, you didnt reply.

Thanks,
Susan Ng

Career Planning: Internship & Goal Setting

I went to this workshop in place of the Academic Enrichment one. There weren’t anymore left. Unlike the “Mediating Conflict & Resolving Disputes” workshop, this one wasn’t crowded there were only about a handful of people there. Since everybody in the room were pretty much strangers to each other, there wasn’t much of a discussion going on. There was just a long lecture. But it was still useful for me.

This one was good since I want to get internships while I’m here at Baruch. They discussed the different types of interships. There are both paid and unpaid internships as well as “credit interships”, something I’ve never heard of before. Basically, credit internships are just interships that give you college credit for compensation. You don’t necessarily get money, or pay, for them. You have to be a junior in order to do one of those though. Freshmen and sophomores can’t do credit interships unfortunately. But freshmen can do paid interships though, which is a PLUS. I like money and getting paid.

Club Fair

YEAH THIS IS MY LAST BLOG!!!! This workshop was the one on 9/24, where there was a huge Club Fair. I was a bit iffy about this, because I wanted to join Clubs in my Sophmore year and get a bit adjusted to Baruch. But since my friends were going, I went too. I had to admit, it wasnt one of the most anticipated workshops, because it was really really crowded in the gym. It was bearable, but I doubt that all the Club hosts anticipated alot of freshmen. During the Club Fair, there were lots of clubs, I think all of them. It was appealing, but I couldnt handle them. Then there was some food for us to eat which was good and we got to talk to our friends. I mean, I only applied to Student Government, and that is a good one I believe for a freshmen. Haha.

Library Workshop

I am really late with this blog, but I need to complete it. Haha. This was the one where we went to the library and we were seated down in front of a librarian and she taught us how to use the Baruch Library Website to locate research and help for anything we needed in our papers/reasearch/hw, etc. I thought that some of the resources were very helpful here. One was the Ask A Librarian, where you can click on the chat with a librarian and talk to a live librarian about any help you need and they can assist you on the spot. I like that alot. Another thing I really liked was the option where you can search a book outside of Baruch, but anywhere in CUNY. This you can do if you are too lazy or there is no book in the Baruch collection and you want to find the book elsewhere. I dont know why we had to write some of these facts on paper and give it to them, because we did get the basic idea of what the librarian needed to say. All in all, I would recommend this to people to learn more about the library site.

Community Global Awareness

This workshop was done to fulfill my career section. At first, it was frustrating a little because the room was way different and I thought that we wouldnt be able to attend it due to limited seating. We got the seats though. I was there with Agnes, Michael, Jeffrey and Brian. The workshop host was about a gay guy who was part of the LGBT community. In this, he talked about how he was turned gay at the age of 27 and before that, how he got an internship working under the administration of Bill Clinton. He said that it was one of the most memorable experiences ever because many people dont work with the President everyday. He talked about how hard his life was not because he was gay, but because people were being racist towards his ethnicity (he was Latino and German I believe). His main point, in the end, was the fact that whether you work in New York, or anywhere, people will always want to put you down so that they can succeed and they can push you back. He said that you have to ignore those people and always strive your best and reach to the top so that you can become successful.

Job and Internships Fair

This Career workshop really was insightful to me. It explained about the Club Fair that was taking place on Nov. 20. In this workshop, 2 guys came up on stage and talked to us about different tips, startegies and do’s/dont’s about the career fair and how to get a successful internship in general. I thought that both of them clearly explained what needed to be done and I learned new career tips.

As for the Job Fair itself, I was nervous at first. I hadnt prepared a mini-speech the night before and I was panicking, thinking that it would be crowded when I went there and that I wouldnt get the chance to be able to get my resume across the companies that I wanted to seek a job in. You had to dress up, but that wasnt a problem.  This was also my first time actually going to one, so that was another reason. On the contrary, it went way better than expected. The gym wasnt crowded at all, it was easy to find the companies that you wanted and there were no lines. I gave my resume to like 6 companies and it was a nice experience. I didnt get an internship because it was mostly for Soph. and up. Also they had summer internships, so I might get a chance then. This experience gave me more confidence and I would recommend this to everyone.

10 Hole Punches!

So a long time ago I went to this seminar with Patrick. It was some thing where we had to get this paper hole punched 10 times and 10 different stations.

We went late so there we not many people left. The first stall we went to was nice enough to punch out about 7 holes for both of us! In the end the lady signing books didn’t even count the number of holes we had. Patrick and I kept seeing hole punchers left unattended but we’re too nice to just pick them up and start punching holes. ;D

Bake sale

On November 17, 2009, Lc 21 and Lc 22 had a bake sale for UNICEF.  I brought chocolate chip cookies for the bake sale, because I didn’t really know what to bring.  During the club hours time on Tuesday, I went to the bake sale to check a couple of times to see if I can help with the bake sale, but everyone was assigned to specific jobs already.  Therefore, I do not have a specific job.  I believe the hard part was to make people donate for the cause, because they simply do not care.  People should care about our bake sale, because it was for UNICEF, not for ourselves.

Club Fair

I attended the club fair on September 29th. It was a bit overwhelming but I am glad I went. It helped me get more accustomed with the Baruch culture and life and I got to see some clubs I am really interested in. There was a great deal going on at once but I just took my time qand was able to find the clubs I am interested in. I learned about the Baruch Hillel and I am now on their e-mail list and also got involved with a Jewish organization called Aish. Through Aish I am already going on a trip to Chile during winter break. It was also nice to get free stuff that they were giving out all over the fair. I answered a quiz question at the movie club stand and won a big piece of red velvet cake. Overall I am really glad I attended this workshop because it got me involved in programs I would not have otherwise found.

Stress and Anxiety Introduction

This workshop taught us method one can use to relieve the stress and anxiety that comes with college. First, it taught us method on how to express our self in the right way and ways to help get out of tense situations. How to tell another person what you want and not have to explain it in a self destructive manner. Then,  the workshop taught us a process  to relax muscles in your body though breathing and muscle contraction techniques. This workshop was very helpful because college and just life itself can be very stressful. So I enjoy my new found knowledge, but I do not have to use it too much. However, there was a part of the exercise where you had to eat a rinse i just hope next time it can be a candy bar.

Freshman Open House

The first freshman workshop that I attended was the Freshman Opn House. It took place on September 17th. At the beginning it was extremely hectic. There were way more students then they had prepared for and everything was all over the place. The refreshmens that were promised ran out before I even got inside. It began with a huge line that went down the entire hallway for every student to type in their social security number. Once I got inside, nobody really knew where to go and just walked in circles. Finally one of the workers took a medium size group of us and escorted us into a lecture room. She only spoke for about ten minutes and then let us go. The information she talked about was not very helpful however the material given out was extremely helpful so in the end I am really glad I went to this workshop. In the packet it gave all the important information about what classes are required to take to graduate and what are the requirements for the different schools. Without this workshop I would not know exactly what was required to ghet into the Zicklin School of business. Also the packet helped me understand how the different tiers worked. Overall it was helpful but I feel that I could have just taken the packet and gotten the same result.

Global Awareness: The Diabetes walk

Now, though Baruch seems to stress attendance to workshops outside our own comfort zones, I didn’t think it’d mean actually finding excuses to fill one of the categories because there weren’t many workshops, but that’s what happened with the global awareness one!

I had actually planned on doing the Heart walk the week previous to this one, but I only remembered it a day in advance, so I opted instead to do the diabetes walk because: for one, a good cause is a good cause, no matter what. Two, it’d fulfill the workshop requirements, and three, it was a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (+ surrounding areas) and back, which is usually nice.

The walk itself wasn’t anything to really write home about, and I went with two friends and we were just enjoying the scenery. Some of the volunteers looked bored out of their minds, while others seemed to be making up for it with their enthusiasm. Luckily the weather was almost perfect, except for the slight chill about the air. I can’t say I had the same enthusiasm as some of the others, simply because it was a cause I couldn’t relate to. I did feel bad for leaving such a minimal donation though (only $5) but I guess I lack the compassion to donate to a charity with lots of pictures, vs a single poor beggar who’s crippled walking about the streets

Library Tour

Yep, my blogs are long overdue, but that’s okay, because I took good care to remember what happened

Well for one, the library tour execution was sloppy at best, with dates and time being changed around and they didn’t quite match up. Even then, there was quite a bit of a delay, because some people were late (and it wasn’t a very nice day outside either), but eventually, we all got settled in and we walked into the library.

It certainly wasn’t my first time in the library, and many of the things that jahn introduced us to I pretty much knew about, or were easily found by way of the various signs throughout the library. We never did move past the 2nd floor printing rooms though, so in a sense we didn’t actually “explore” the library as we should have. That, in my opinion was a good thing, since it meant less time wasted.

Well actually, I did learn about the study rooms, if we needed it, which sounds like a good idea and definitely useful

Your life, your money 11/11

This was a very late workshop at 6 P.M. it was very unusually to be around the school at this time because I usually never am. Much of what was talked about in this workshop I already heard on freshman orientation. The guest speaker talked about saving money, not having credits and staying out of debt. They gave out gifts at the workshop, but unfortunately I didn’t win anything from the raffle.

Student Life: Golden Key Buddies

Date: November 19, 2009

Time: 12:30 – 2:30PM

Location: VC 3-120

This wasn’t really a workshop, but more of a meeting for those interested in the Golden Key International Honour Society as a Mentee (freshmen and sophomores) or as a Mentor (juniors and seniors). It is a “meet and greet” event that let us get to know the purpose of Golden Key and the officials who are behind the society. I’ve met Evelyn, who is the vice president of the program and who knows Analucia. Basically, Golden Key seeks to help students—both Mentees and Mentors—to achieve academic excellence and recognition through job opportunities, building an impressive resume, acquiring scholarships, earning good leadership qualities, and networking and connecting with other academic partners.

I selected this workshop because Analucia recommended it to me after my desperate call for a Student Life workshop. I was also interested in finding more about the Golden Key Society and the opportunities it offers academically. I went with Kali because she was also interested. At the beginning of the meeting, it was quite uncomfortable because Kali and I were the only freshmen amongst the “inducted” upperclassmen. So during the first half of the meeting, all Kali and I could think of were the cookies and soda and pretzels that they were preparing.

It did not fail my expectations because it did provide a lot of information about the program. As a result, I signed myself up as a Mentee and so did Kali. Towards the second half of the meeting, the awkwardness faded away as the game of charades began. We were split into two very competitive groups. It was very intense, and I was quite proud of myself at being able to act out “tofu.” Despite our group’s disappointing defeat, it was a very close call. Kali continued the game during Ecology Lab.

I learned a lot about the Golden Key program and playing charades. I was surprised at how easy it was to get along with intimidating upperclassmen. I definitely recommend it to any student.

P.S.
My final workshop!!! WHOOT!!!

Ehuang workshop 6 – Impression and Management

On November 5, 2009, I attended Impression and Management workshop from 1:00pm to 2pm at 3-160. The workshop has shown how jobs opportunities are mainly from connections. I also learn that making friends that would key to my success in future. It just amazes me how over 80% of the jobs are gain by connections and less than 10% are gain though the internet. The speaker had shown us much on how to give a good impression to friends and how to maintain the connection.

This workshop explains to me how most people get their jobs though connection. I learn many techniques on how to make friends and how to maintain it. This workshop did take me outside of my comfort zone because all this stuff is very new to me especially the part where jobs are gain though connections. This workshop passed my expectation by the information that was given to me. I would recommend this to another student because many people do not know that jobs are gain though connections.

workshop 6 (last and final workshop YAY)

Title of Workshop: Mercedes Matter – A Retrospective

Category of Workshop: Arts at Baruch

Date & Time of Workshop: November 17, 2009 1 – 2 pm

Brief Description & Workshop Goals: So right now you’re probably thinking how did Diana and Jessica (and Roxanne who tagged along with us) make it to two places at the same time right? Well that’s because we’re awesome! J lol See what happened was that we really wanted to get these workshops over with so after English we all ran to some weird building we had never been to before to see if maybe hopefully they would let us in early and out early. However, this was not so. By the time we left Martine and Kali were still waiting outside and me and Jessica had to go so we gave up. We did our community service (Roxanne just watched us -_-) and then we texted Martine to ask her where she wants to go eat when suddenly she gave us good news: the gallery thing was still open! So we ran over there and begged this lady to please let us in and since she was very nice she did J So we kind of got an express tour of Mercedes Matter’s work. Overall I didn’t like her work very much but then again I’m not much of an art lover so Matter shouldn’t take offense. I did like one particular piece (I don’t know the name because like I said we had the express tour) that was like the second piece the lady showed us. She said that was Matter’s early work that reflected ‘the artist pre-abstract’.

Explain why you selected this particular workshop & how it took you out of your comfort zone. If it didn’t take you out of your comfort zone why not?:  I selected this workshop because it was the last one I needed to do and I didn’t have a lot to do during the break so it was ideal for me. It didn’t take me out of my comfort zone but I do think it took the lady out of her comfort zone. The poor lady was obviously very pressed for time between trying to show us the paintings and wrapping up the gallery that she even forgot to sign our papers and didn’t answer some questions. But all in all shout out to the lady that helped us: thanks!! J

How did this workshop meet or fail your expectations? Would you recommend it to another student? Why or why not?: The workshop did meet my expectations because it had a lot of art work which I assumed it would have. I would recommend it to another student because although I didn’t fall in love with the piece it doesn’t mean they won’t.

mediating conflicts in personal enrichment workshop

i guess the workshop was useful. the professor guided us through a couple of examples demonstrating how we go to the office and tell them our problems in Baruch. she gave us templates for each group to present which gave me some info on where i would go next time i have difficulty with a professor or school in general.

Ehuang workshop 5 – Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape, The Nature of Photography

On October 6, 2009, I attended Gallery Tour: The Nature of Landscape, The Nature of Photography starting from 1:00pm at Mishkin. The workshop has shown me many different pictures about the landscape. I also learn that the artist use objects and techniques to created those landscapes without using the actual landscape. It just amazes me how they create landscapes by using objects like human bodies. The tour guide shown us much photography of landscapes that I would like to visit but cant.

This workshop explains to me how photographer can be creative and make their landscapes. I learn that there are many techniques for photographers to take pictures of unrealistic places. This workshop did not take me outside of my comfort zone because this is where I can always go to for drawing my own creative ideas. This workshop passed my expectation by the detail of how creative each photographer can be. I would recommend this to another student because not many people know how to be creative and unique.

Study abroad 9/17

Right after attending the freshman reception for a bit, I went downstairs to another fair. This was the study abroad. This was one of the most interesting workshops I went to. I found it to be so interesting because going away to study gives you a lot of opportunities to explore the world around you. There were many places to go two places that caught my attention were France and London. They had a very cool atmosphere to them. Hopefully at one point of my semester, I do take the opportunity to go away and explore the world.

workshop 5/ Community Service/ UNICEF

Title of Workshop: UNICEF

Category of Workshop: Community Service/ Global Awareness

Date & Time of Workshop: November 17, 2009 1:00 – 2:00

Brief Description & Workshop Goals: Ok so because some people didn’t do Light the Night, Analucia kindly offered the us an alternative: volunteer with another LC and work with UNICEF. At first I thought it was going to be some long tedious, boring thing but it really wasn’t. See what we had to do was help the LC (12 or 21 I forget) at their bake sale by collecting donations or handing out fliers. Jessica and I chose to work together at collecting donations so at 1:15 we showed up for duty. That’s when the peer mentor chick gave us a big sign that said “UNICEF BAKE SALE”, a can to collect donations in, and lollipops (because we were also selling lollipops). So we walked around for a while, trying to stand in areas where it was likely people would give donations (like at the bottom of the stairs from the 2nd floor down & in the eating area right outside the place where the cashiers are) and even approached some people and ended up getting a fair amount of donations.

Explain why you selected this particular workshop & how it took you out of your comfort zone. If it didn’t take you out of your comfort zone why not?: I selected this workshop but it was my only other option? Lol. But I did learn stuff from it but more about that later… This experience did take me out of my comfort zone a little because it was kind of awkward to be standing around with a big sign asking people for money. But on the plus side Jessica was there so it was pretty fun.

How did this workshop meet or fail your expectations? Would you recommend it to another student? Why or why not?: I would recommend it to another student because it’s not just any regular old workshop, it’s actually doing something to help others. I expected it to be kind of awkward and it was but I think in the end it was worth it.

What do you feel you learned from the workshop experience? What surprised you about it? What could you take away from the experience?:  Well during the donation collecting I didn’t really learn anything but in the meeting we had before the event I did learn stuff. I learned that UNICEF collects money to buy essentials for poor kids and families in third world countries; I learned that a few dollars that might not mean a lot to us can buy a lot of things for others; and I learned that lollipop cupcakes are not a very good mix.

..Long Time Ago…

I attended my final workshop on the October 22. That is correct, it took me a month to finally blog about the Career Planning workshop. I felt that this was probably the most informative workshop that I had attended. The speaker spoke with an emphasis on the importance of applying for internships. She also talked about the proper procedures to significantly help your chances of getting an internship. They handed out a booklet that contained most of what the speaker talked about. I’m pretty they have more copies of these booklets at the STARR Career Development Center. Overall, the workshop was very informative, but it felt like I was in a lecture hall.

Arts at Baruch: Mercedes Matter: A Retrospective

Date: November 17, 2009

Time: 1:00 – 2:00PM

Location: Mishkin Gallery

This workshop is basically an art tour or an art gallery of Mercedes Matter’s abstract paintings and art works. It’s a showcase of her quite bizarre, strange and colorful paintings. It is not an art for everyone, especially for those who doesn’t really appreciate the type of art one believes a child can do.

I selected this workshop because I desperately needed a workshop for Arts at Baruch. And I, myself do create art through drawings and sketches due to the influence of my mom, who is also a painter herself. It didn’t take me out of my comfort zone at all. I find it quite interesting, actually. I learned a lot about the artist, Mercedes Matter. I learned that she has been a painter all of her life, incorporating her unique takes of ideas through abstract painting. I noticed this in her use of vivid colors and the movement within the patterns and the strokes of her paintings and drawings. What strikes me the most is that she spent months, sometimes years in some of her paintings.

It somewhat failed my expectations because I was quite excited to be in an art gallery, but her paintings and charcoal drawings did not really appeal to my taste. I do appreciate the colors and the brush strokes, but I’ve seen these kinds of artwork before. Abstract art isn’t really my cup of tea when it comes to art, unless it’s by Pablo Picasso, who I think effectively conveys meanings and emotions behind his bizarre artworks. I would recommend it to another student if he or she desperately needed an Art workshop or is in the mood for a nice stroll in an art gallery.

I learned a lot about Mercedes Matter and her passion for art — she began painting at the age of six— which is what really impressed me about her. This workshop definitely encouraged me to continue with my own passion for drawing and appreciating other’s artwork.

workshop 4

Okay so there was a little mix up. The first work shop that I did ( the cookies thing/ Freshmen Reception)  is actually being counted by Analucia as Academic Enrichment and I put it as Student Life soo yeah…. Now I’m going to do a new Student Life….which was actually a while ago but yeah….

Title of Workshop: Club Fair

Category of Workshop: Student Life

Date & Time of Workshop: Umm sometime in late September or early October. Let me check….Thursday, September 24th at 12pm.

Brief Description & Workshop Goals: Well even though this wasn’t really a workshop the goal of this event I’m guessing was to get newcomers involved in Baruch clubs. Basically what happened was that some friends and I had nothing to do on our (then seemingly) long two hour break and we heard a lot of noise down in the gym so we decided to explore. Once we got downstairs we saw that it was the club fair and honestly we were going to leave but then we saw candy and cookies so we stayed. We walked around a few times, saw a few clubs, and then left.

Explain why you selected this particular workshop & how it took you out of your comfort zone. If it didn’t take you out of your comfort zone why not?: Like I said we didn’t really pick this particular club we just happened upon it. But it was pretty good. I mean we got to walk around at our own pace and leave whenever we wanted to so I wouldn’t say it took me out of my comfort zone.

How did this workshop meet or fail your expectations? Would you recommend it to another student? Why or why not?: I didn’t have expectations but if I did this fair certainly did meet them. I learned about a lot of clubs like the Ecuadorian Club, the Bowling Club, a lot of sororities, and a Hispanic business club I forgot the name of. I also learned that although I gave my information to a bunch of clubs (and did plan to attend them) this semester has been very busy and I have been unavailable to attend any meeting.

Oh and yeah I would recommend it to another student.

What do you feel you learned from the workshop experience? What surprised you about it? What could you take away from the experience?: I learned that the first semester of college is really time consuming. Like I was in honors classes in high school so I thought college would be fairly easy for me and in a sense it is but its just a lot of work to do. Therefore, even though I really wanted to go the Ecuadorian Club meetings a lot of times I had to do other things like study of a test or finish up a homework of whatever so I couldn’t go. I can take away from this though is that I need to schedule my time better in future semesters so I can do my work and do things I want to too.
